Overview

Overview

In the course of the digital transformation, many areas of social life are changing. Professional, private and social tasks are increasingly supported by new technologies, generating an enormous potential of data. The need for prudent and responsible data use is constantly increasing with the growing amount of data available. This tension gives rise to various challenges that become relevant in the context of lifelong learning.

The research field 'Computational social and education sciences' deals with all topics that can be found at the interface between education and computer science, between new technologies and social science demands. On the one hand, this involves the acquisition of digital competences, digital learning and the technology-supported collection and processing of educational data. On the other hand, the digitalisation of the living environment is accompanied by a change in values, responsibilities and social structures. These changes need to be analysed, assessed and ultimately shaped using scientific methods.

By processing data from multiple accesses, we seek to gain insights into education and learning, as well as into the use of new technologies and artificial intelligence in a societal context. For example, we investigate how competences can be recorded and evaluated in a technology-based way, how data competences and data ethics can be taught in a process of lifelong learning, and how knowledge about social developments can be generated from the analysis and linking of data of different provenance.

Concrete examples of topics in the research field Computational social and education sciences are:

  • Cycle of technology-based recording, evaluation and promotion of competences
  • Digital competencies and digital learning across the lifespan
  • Application areas, opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence
  • Information science and ethical aspects in the context of digital transformation
  • Needs analyses in the area of digital transformation
