Daniel A. Walser, studied architecture at the ETH Zurich and the Sapienza in Rome. His teachers included Frank O. Gehry, Wolfgang Schett and Luisa Anversa. On graduating in 1998, he worked as assistant to Professor Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani at the ETH in Zurich. Since 1999 he has been working as a research assistant on the degree course in building and design at the University of the Grisons FHGR in Chur with Professor Christian Wagner and Jürg Conzett. He teaches architecture history, architecture theory and urban planning. Between 2005 and 2009 he was leading the faculty of architecture at the FHGR. Besides of teaching, since 2010 he is mainly occupied with research. In 2006 he participated in the opening of the Chur Institute of Architecture, a new faculty of architecture on a master level in Switzerland till 2009. Daniel A. Walser lives and works in Zurich und Chur.
Daniel A. Walser attaches great importance to his freelance work as a critic, in which he focuses on the relationship of tension between architecture and art. He has lectured on Scandinavian and Mediterranean architecture in Switzerland, China, Australia and Canada. He currently works on the architecture of Valerio Olgiati, Bruno Giacometti (1907-), Andres Liesch (1927-1990) and also completed a pieces of research on the architecture in Graubünden, the architectural interventions and buildings of the architects Pfleghard & Haefeli in Uzwil (1898-1912) and Rudolf Olgiati (1910-95) and rural architecture in Cambodia. Daniel A. Walser received in 2007 the Swiss Art Award for Architecture Education, and 2009 he won an artist in residence grant at the artist residence Nairs in Scuol.
Daniel A. Walser is curator of the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2024 together with Anhelina Starkova, João Charters Monteiro and Jaan Kuusemets. The title will be «Resources for a Future”.
